It seems like sometimes I turn every thread into a thread about music. Or at least, try to. Here is a thread where we can talk about what we are digging lately, so that people who do not want to read yet another post about bands can avoid. I figure: we have a youtube thread, we have a movie thread kind of, here is the music thread.

lately I cannot stop having this song song stuck in my head, even though I find it kind of obnoxious and uninteresting. That guitar tone! those chords! blaghhhh. They are coming to my school soon and all my friends are exciting.

My roommate says they sound "just like Sonic Youth," which... is completely wrong and weird. Occasionally he makes musical comparisons that make no sense. Another one my friends refer to a lot is when he said that No Age "just sound like a Replacements rip-off."
My theory is that he had never heard the replacements, but knew that I liked them, and so he assumed they sounded a certain way?

Anyway. These are all bands that I like. HOW ABOUT YOU, FRIENDS?

Most recent album I've bought is the Eels "End Times".

Some reviews have said that it is too emotionally-straight-forward and bordering on maudlin but...

I think those people are being needlessly cynical.

It's a mostly great album.

I went on a roadtrip to Woodstock in the summer and my friend played Dan Deacon for me because he has a song that uses dog barks and we used to get high and blast Jingle Dogs with windows down on busy streets.  I didn't really like it and forgot about it.

But I just discovered a new Dan Deacon vid last week that was sick and I sent it to him.  He was like, I already played this for you.  So I guess I was late on recognizing the brilliance.

Song doesn't start until the six minute mark:

I have more to contribute to this thread but I got to take care of business, I'll stop back in tonight.

Today these a lot, I'm in a RAHH BRITPOP mood obviously

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilKcXIFi-Rc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVWLrloeToA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4fMdG5D18o This actually opens up sounding like an actual Kim Wilde song but gets fuck*ng awesome. My love is slightly inexplicable admittedly

I've also been listening to a lot of John Cale but can't find Andalucia which I have been listening to loads so have this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEOZLQ3d1FI Achingly beautiful, my favourite version of what has at times been the most murdered song ever

All the Britpop stuff is incredibly out of sync with my normal listening but that is the beauty of such things I suppose

The other day I listened to all of Neutral Milk Hotel's three albums. I very much enjoyed the first two. The third, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, well... It came highly recommended by some people who I like, but after listening to it... Wow. Musically, it was very good. But the lyrics... creepy and morbid and strange. Nothing made sense, and the stuff that did make sense, I didn't want it to because it was so weird. Like, if I didn't speak English, I would have thought it was beautiful.

Huh?  No Age sounds more like Sonic Youth than that other band.  I assume you've considered the fact that your room mate doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.  Also, why do you care?

Me, I've been listening to a lot of new music that's come my way lately.  Ripped an entire collection from a friend.  Some of the Gems are , Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga, Band of hosss second album, Johnny Cash's Personal File.  I also picked up Them Crooked Vultures which is pretty dang good.  I'm also listening to GKA's box set of a mix disc as well as The Mayors, both of which are damn fine.  I'm listening to GKA's mix as I type this.  3 is a magic number...

Yeah, he doesn't know what he is talking about. It just makes me wonder how many other things he jabbers about are utter crock.
I have been thinking a lot lately about how we both talk a lot, but when I talk a lot it is because I am bad at knowing what things other people will think are interesting. I tell too many stories, etc. He talks a lot because he thinks the things he has to say are important, and correct, and everyone else is an idiot. GRATING.

*****_god... a while ago I got a personal email from Dan Deacon. it was really weird. I wrote an email to his label asking about getting some new albums, and he wrote me back personally. I kind of felt cool about it, but it was also like... a personal email from a musician who I am not particularly into? OK.

FUTURE OF THE LEFT

Seriously, this band is so good.  I only started listening to them in December and I love everything I have heard.

Here are some songs:

Arming Eritrea

Chin Music

The Hope That House Built

XXX version

I went to a concert in San Francisco last October and I swear I saw the girl in the bathtub.

I liked that song/video so much, and this song even more, that I was really excited for their album. It's not that good. But I'm seeing them a week from tomorrow.

That's quite an emoticon.  I was trying to parse it, unwilling to accept it as what it clearly is.  I thought, "surely that is a man clapping".  But I think not.

It conveys extreme appreciation in a way all men can understand. Clapping fits this so why not
